The Modern Samaritan
“Yes I know, I know, I will be home soon.” “I’m serious, come home now, you know how Chicago is at night.” ” I know honey. See you soon.” The man hung up the phone and continued to walk. He was on Michigan Avenue after his job and was heading to his car, which was parked far from his workplace. He worked for a new company which has gained large traction, and after his hard work, he decided to take a walk through a nearby park for a while before driving home. So he carried on the sidewalk through the dark of night and the bright city lights. As he started to approach the he heard footsteps behind him. As he turned around, he was attacked by robbers. They beat him to the ground, took his wallet, phone and car keys. They also took his coat and left him near death.
Hours passed as he laid there, but soon one of his coworkers passed by him. However, he went to the other side of the road, because he had work to do, and was afraid of the robbers and being their next target. More desperate hours had passed, and another one of his coworkers came by. When he saw the man lying on the road, he did the same as the last coworker and went to the other side of the road. More hours slowly ticked by, when a homeless man walked up to the man, and had compassion on him. He the man up and brought him to his own car. He poured rubbing alcohol on the man’s wounds, and patched him up with some bandages.
He then drove the man to a nearby motel, and took care of him. He then paid the manager almost all of his remaining money, and said ” When I come back I try will to pay in full of any other expenses that might come.” He headed for the door, turned around, and said, “Please take care of him.”
Message #1: Luke 10:25-29
On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”
27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[a]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b]”
28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”
29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
Message #2: Luke 10 36-37
“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
